   The fail-safe iterator works on the snapshot of the actual collection, and so any modification to the actual collection will not disturb the iterator. In the case of CopyOnWriteArrayList, the iterator() method creates a new instance of COWIterator, to which the original collection is passed and a snapshot is taken and used for iteration.

   Aug 21,  · In case of fail-safe iterator, either copy of underlying collection is used or a snap shot of collection at any point of time is used making the fail-safe iterator weakly consistent. Fail-fast iterators have their own remove and add methods that can be used to modify the collection while iterating.

   Fail-Safe Iterators. Contrary to fail-fast Iterator, fail-safe iterator doesn't throw any Exception if Collection is modified structurally while one thread is Iterating over it because they work on clone of Collection instead of original collection and that's why they are called as fail-safe iterator.    Fail-fast iterators are typically implemented using a volatile counter on the collection object.. When the collection is updated, the counter is incremented. When an Iterator is created, the current value of the counter is embedded in the Iterator object.; When an Iterator operation is performed, the method compares the two counter values and throws a CME if they are different.
